“Heart” Horse Poem by Monte Baker

I talked to a friend just the other day

who’s got lots of opinions and plenty to say.

We discussed what we both like to see in a horse

his requirements and mine were different of course?

He likes a clean throatlatch and a long skinny neck,

and prefers that their hocks are set close to the deck.

Short backs and hard feet and clean slopin’ shoulder,

and a gaskin that looks like it swallered a boulder.

He likes a short face and a big ol’soft eye,

and says these are the horses he’s likely to buy.

And when he’d completed his lengthy discourse,

on all of the attributes of the quality horse,

he asked my opinion, and where do I start?

And I said that I…just want horses with heart.

I said I want heart above all the other.

I don’t care if he’s Smart Little Lena’s full brother.

Or just how much money that his grandmother won,

o r whether he’s roan, palomino or dun.

But give me a horse with some grit and some try,

and some heart and some guts and that’s one that I’ll buy.

And I’ve found it’s the same with a woman or man…

the good ones won’t quit you when the shit hits the fan…

Many horse poems seem to have a special soul touching feeling about them.

I just found this lovely poem about a man kissing his horse and connecting to his horse’s wonderful spirit. It is good to take the time to find and read a poem from time to time in our too busy lives. It gives us the sweet touch of connecting to a creative person and feeling part of what they felt on a subject that they felt passionate enough to write a poem about it.

Sometimes being business owners we feel that we don’t have the time to read for just enjoyment, that our reading has to be on business subjects only. But studies have shown that people that make time in their busy schedules for breaks of fun and enjoyment actually work better and get more done than people that just work, work, work and never take a break.

So go read the horse poem, read it slowly and with care and feel and see it in your mind. The simple act of reading poetry can stimulate your mind to think better, more creative thoughts and that can led you to a better day. Think of poems as tasty mind vitamins. Want to super charge your brain today? Then take the time to write your own poem.

Horse Poem: Kissing a Horse by Robert Wrigley

“He who draws noble delights from sentiments of poetry is a true poet, though he has never written a line in all his life.” ~ George Sand, 1851

“Poetry should… should strike the reader as a wording of his own highest thoughts, and appear almost a remembrance.” ~ John Keats

Please leave a comment about other horse poems you have found and enjoyed. Or about how poems makes you feel and think. Thanks!
