Message from: Cada McCoy: Just wanted to extend a rather last-minute invitation to those in the Charleston, SC, area or anyone planning to visit the area this weekend (or might be looking for a good excuse for a mini-vacation to a beautiful part of the country! .

I am co-hosting a free equine nutritional seminar on Saturday, November 12, featuring Stance Equine founder and nutritional biochemist, Dr. Tim Kempton. Dr. Kempton was responsible for introducing copra (coconut meal) to the Australia’s livestock world some 20 years ago. Copra’s nutritional benefits proved so remarkable, it was adopted by horse owners there and in Europe who were looking for naturally clean, low NSC equine feed. It is now available in the US, first introduced a few years ago on the West Coast and, most recently, on the East Coast.

This seminar was initially planned for folks in our local vicinity who are using (with huge success) CoolStance and want more information about it. However, the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response necessitated that we move our gathering to a larger facility, so now we have space for even more attendees.

Beginning at 10:00, Dr. Kempton will present a morning educational session exploring topics on general equine nutritional requirements and nutritional partitioning, digestive conditions, including acidosis, dysbiosis and ulcers, and other metabolic-triggered issues such as laminitis, obesity, gait problems, behavior and tying up. Feed balancing is also on the agenda.

Lunch and a question-and-answer session will follow for those who can stay after Dr. Kempton’s morning program. Registration is required so we have a head count for lunch, so please contact me off-list or RSVP to Robin Brown at email maynevent @ msn.com or 843-832-9613. We can send you directions and details at that time.

Several local barefoot trimmers will be attending since they are seeing such positive responses to copra feeding from many of their clients’ horses, so thought this seminar might be of special interest to members of this group, in particular.

You’ll find more information about Stance Equine, Dr. Kempton and the topics that will be addressed in the workshop on Saturday at http://www.stanceequine.com/

If you’re interested in equine nutrition discussions, especially with a somewhat non-traditional, environmental “flavor”, please join our group conversation at http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/EquinesEatingWell/

Hope to see you there and at the seminar on Saturday!

Want a healthier horse and cut down on hay waste (cost) at the same time? Check out the new Texas Haynet.

New Round Bale Hay Net from Texas Haynet

The Texas Haynet company, maker of the first round bale hay net, recently came into existence because of a small equine rehab facility specializing in hoof rehabilitation. Little Thunder Stables, in central Texas, had to find a way to control the sugar intake of the horses under their care for founder rehabilitation and turned to the research of “slow feeding”.

Restricting access to cut grass hay by way of a grid or net resulted in slower eating and better nutrition for all horses, but is especially important to sugar sensitive equines. It is said that “necessity is the mother of invention”! Since there was no way to economically feed the animals at Little Thunder Stables other than using round bales, the Texas Haynet company was formed after 2 years of testing many different forms of netting material and designs.

Texas Haynet Round Bale Hay Net

No Waste – Slows Eating – Reduces Stress – Calms Aggressive Behavior
- Excellent for Insulin Resistant Horses
- Better for the Digestive System as it Mimics Natural Grazing

If you are not satisfied with the net, it may be returned for a full refund (less shipping) anytime in the first 90 days with proof of purchase.

Texas Haynet is a small company owned by Leslie Davis of Kingsland, Texas. Leslie has been involved with equine rehabilitation since 1997. Leslie and her husband, Joe Schedler worked for a large Texas horse rescue for several years before focusing on just hoof rehabilitation. Little Thunder Stables is committed to making sure the Texas Haynet company continues to produce quality hay nets for round bales.

Feeding cut grass hay is a challenge for all domestic horse owners and is the staple food for all equines. Researchers still do not fully understand “why” a horse masticates hay more completely when they take smaller bites rather than large bites, but it has been proven that if you feed most cut hay through a hole that is 2″ or less, the horse has better digestion. With improved digestion, nutrients are fully extracted and sugars, starches, heavy metals, toxins all are handled better by the horse’s liver more efficiently.

Economically round baled cut grass hay is the best choice when feeding multiple horses, so Texas Haynet’s design for a round hay net to fit over a large round bale of hay is truly a product born out of necessity. It certainly serves the purpose for which it was designed, but one of the best benefits of using a slow feeder hay net over a round bale has been the fact that the hay bale will now last much longer, thus saving time and money!

Square Bale Hay Net in the Works!

Another need in the market of slow feeding is an easy-to-apply net to fit over square bales of hay and Texas Haynet is currently testing their newest design for this and hopes to have it in full production before the end of the year.

You can contact Leslie at Texas Haynet http://www.txhaynet.com or at 325-388-2727

State of California claiming herbal blends for horses are categorized as – remedies – and therefore have to be registered as – veterinary drugs – !

by Jessica of Earth Song Ranch November 2008.

I am not sure what the State Department of Ag is up to, although it is apparent the new director wants to make a name for herself! I am sure it is in conjunction with the FDA and trying to stop us being able to use as well as manufacturer products that treat – disorders – in a natural and cost effective manner.

They, the State of California Department of Ag, are now targeting any and all companies doing business in the state using any kind of herbal blend for animal use to register that blend as a – veterinary drug – at the cost of $180 per product including Earth Song Ranch products yet that is not a guarantee of being able to sell that product, they have decided to interpret their regulations in a new manner and more broadly then they ever have and have decided that herbs are – remedies – and therefore come under the class of – drug -.

So unfortunately I am in the process of registering The Herbal Wormer, and possibly a couple other products as such, as I cannot afford to register them all at this time, I am not a Uckele or an Alltech, Silver Lining Herbs, Wendell or Hilton Herbs and feel that this is one step closer to the government taking away our rights to treat ourselves and our animals with alternatives including herbs, supplements, etc. They have targeted Wendell Herbs, Hilton Herbs, Silver Lining Herbs, and many more. There are only two categories in the state – feed additive – and – remedy – to sell livestock products there is no such category as supplement, so many companies are being hit with this new TAX if you will to do business in the state including companies like Hilton Herbs who are international!

If you need anything specific for your horses, please phone me, as I do have some of the blends still, and can help you with Cushing, EPM, Joint (yes any joint product is also considered a drug! Because there is no category for supplement!), Mare-Zyme etc. The Pro-Zyme, Pro-Zyme +, Colostrum, Beta Glucan, Kelp, and all other products

NOTE from Joni: Personally I have been reading and learning about natural health since I was about twelve years old and over and over again since then I have heard about the FDA and the large drug companies trying to restrict and regulate the our use of natural herbs, supplements, and vitamins.

Is the FDA totally corrupt like so much of our government? Keep your mind open and learn, but also be aware of who you learn from. Mainstream media is owned by the largest companies. Watch who is padding who’s wallets – who will the they want to protect?

Do you know the importance of proper nutrition for your horse’s health and performance?

I recently read about a top trainer that was quoted as saying, “the number one thing that my clients skimp on is top quality feed and nutrients for their horses”. He went on to say that within 30 to 60 days on his special diet the horse’s looks and attitude are vastly improved. So much so, that many of his clients when they visit their horse are amazed and ask what secret show grooming products does he use.

“They have a hard time understanding that it was just the difference in the quality of nutrition the horse received.”

So isn’t time for you to learn more about horse nutrition? Join me on Wednesday, August 1st, at 5 pm Pacific as EquineTeleseminar.net is hosting a special call with Dr. Eve Finkelstein, Bsc Bs MS Phd.

It will be one of the most interesting and possibly controversial calls Patricia Reszetylo has ever hosted. How can it not be, when the topic is “Nutrition for the Equine“?

If you’re in a hurry you can register for the call now.

** Why you should be on this call **

All the health care in the world will not help your horse if its nutrition is neglected. Nutrition is the bare essence of horse husbandry. Neglect it, and everything else you do with, to, or for your horse will fall short.

Did you know that the color of your horse’s coat can be affected by nutrition? You can have a blacker black horse, a more golden palomino, or a brighter gold chestnut!

Did you also know that there is much you can do to improve your horse’s hooves through the right nutrients? Some horses that had to wear horseshoes for most of their life can now go barefoot with no problems.

Proper equine nutrition has even made horses that were difficult to train easier to handle with a more willing attitude.

So the bottom line is – if you are interested in learning anything about Equine Nutrition, you need to be on this call Wednesday August 1st, at 8 pm Eastern, 7 pm Central, 6 pm Mountain, and 5 pm Pacific.

You can read some of the questions we will answer, and register on this page now.

** What Learning About Equine Nutrition Means to You **

All health must start with a sound nutritional program. No training program, no fitness regime will bring your horse to it’s peak performance without it. There is so much to learn when we take on the task of caring for our equine friends; surely we owe them 90 minutes of our time to learn more about something so basic and vital.

** What to do now **

Read the questions or think of your own, or – if you’re in a hurry – scroll to the bottom of the page and quickly reserve your tele-seat before we fill all the spots.

“Is alfalfa hay hard on a horse’s kidneys?”

“I like to add some cracked corn to my horses’ oats at feeding time. I have been told that corn is not necessary, it has no real food value or nutrients, that the horses simply eat it and then expels all of it whole, and I should quit feeding them corn. What are your thoughts on feeding horses cracked corn???”

“I’ve been feeding my 24 year old TB a mix of Senior Feed and 10% pellets (6 cups a.m. and p.m.), as well as hay cubes, and he’s gained weight nicely but you can still see his ribs around his big belly. Is this OK, and if not, what do you suggest?”

“Please discuss your philosophy about the appropriate feeding “way” (i.e. hay from the ground vs. from a net, etc.) at pasture and in a stall so that a horse’s natural foraging instinct is encouraged.”

By the way, what is the most burning, unanswered question you have about your horse’s nutrition? Well now is your chance to get that question answered. But hurry – questions get answered in the order that they are received, so you don’t want to wait too long before posting yours. Remember to reserve your copy of the call telepak, as there are going to be questions we simply can’t get to on the live call, and Dr. Eve has agreed to answer all remaining questions… but you’ll only hear them if you get the telepak!

“See” you on the call…(Bring your questions, and get ready to take lots of notes)

P.S. This is a zero-cost call and if you have high-speed internet, you can listen in via the webcast! You’ll discover how to incorporate practical Equine Nutrition into your horse care routine in more practical ways. If you’re serious about caring for your horse, about giving it as much as it gives you, you need to be on this call. Register Now for the Equine Nutrition call.

Sign up even if you can’t make the call, your questions make the event more valuable for everybody.
