We've just discovered the joys of farming in our own garden, I have to say potato soup is our favourite of the month. I found a website dedicated to just potato soup recipes, which is quite amazing when you think about it. There's a website for anything and everything nowadays it seems!

Our county in Virginia has attempted to reduce the run off of manure piles into the water supply. In order to do this it is best to use a concrete base with wooden sides. To cover the manure it is best to have a sturdy Compost Cover that is porous and allows air to pass through. Water and air will transform the manure after it has reached 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Even a small manure pile with no sides will decompose faster when covered. Then end product is really black gold.

Great info! My Brother has been composting for years - not just manure but every bit of organic material on his ranch. With states taking the lead and helping to fund/promote programs like this more and more people will do the right thing for the environment. Of course the other great benefit is that compost is also the absolute best fertilizer you can use!

This group coordinates a national program know as EQIP, Environmental Quality Incentive Program. They have a prime directive to protect natural resources (specifically water resources) and do have cost sharing programs. Farms must sign up by a specific date every year to be eligible for the coming year. Farms are ranked based on the severity of their problems.
