To Benefit Equine Assisted Therapeutic Riding Centers

Message from Lisa Miller…

I became interested in documenting foal births in 2010 after a friend of mine mentioned she had two pregnant Thoroughbreds. I thought it would be fun to document a foal birth through photography, and even though the idea of hanging out in a cold barn in the middle of winter didn’t thrill me, the idea of being present during these births did.

I knew very little about horses and even less about birthing a horse, but for some reason I was really excited about documenting this. So when the time came for the first birth I was there and I did exactly what I’d set out to do, photograph the birth of a foal from the moment the water breaks until the foal starts to nurse. It was an amazing site to behold! Even more amazing was that the next day, as I sorted through the hundreds of images, I found two or three incredible shots of the moment when the mare and the foal first connected. It was electric how the images jumped off the screen and hit me like a lightning bolt between the eyes! I knew I had to do something with these images…but what?

A few weeks later it was time for the second mare to give birth. Once again I managed to be there to document the event. The highlight of that evening: when I had to put my camera down and give a pull on a very large baby that had trouble getting out. I can’t tell you how it felt to facilitate the birth of that foal in the photo above. Her name is I’m A Bird, and she’s a beauty! Once again, the next day I was sorting through hundreds of images and sure enough, two or three images jumped out at me. They were of the same thing: that amazing moment when the mare and the foal first connect. Wow. I was stunned! These photos were breathtaking! And so The Foal Project was born. I didn’t know for whom, or for what, I just had a name and knew The Foal Project was going to help someone! I also knew I wanted to do a gallery show and maybe a book, but one question remained: Who would benefit?

As the summer progressed and my photography studio’s wedding season moved into full swing, The Foal Project lingered in the back of my mind. Foaling season for Thoroughbreds was over, but I could not stop thinking about documenting more births. I knew if I could just get the work done, the purpose for it would follow.

I met some great people over the summer who put me in touch with other great people and I started to line up locations to photograph births during the 2011 foaling season. When I asked these same people who could benefit from the money I could raise by completing this project, I learned about Therapeutic Riding Centers.

Therapeutic Riding Centers help children with autism and other challenges, as well as veterans with issues like post- traumatic stress disorder, through horse-related activities and therapies. I’ve always been an advocate for children, but I also wanted to do something in honor of my parents, both of whom are veterans (USAF). Doing something to support Therapeutic Riding Centers seemed to be the perfect fit!

So that’s how The Foal Project was born, and this is where I stand.

It’s now mid-March 2011 and the foaling season is underway. I’ve photographed several births so far, and I hope to make it to as many as possible over the next few months.

From there, I will choose one or two images from each birth showing that beautiful, energized connection between the mare and foal. I’m hoping to have a gallery show ready by mid-summer and it’s my intention to display and sell these images to raise money for Equine Assisted Therapeutic Riding Centers. Prints will be available for purchase at the shows as well as on-line, and a photo documentary of the images in a book form will also be created. I can see this show being used for other special events, and I really hope it will grow from there!

When looking to commission an equine artist for a custom horse portrait there are several key questions you should be asking apart from the initially obvious ones of price and style.

What does it take for an equine artist to capture the true likeness of my horse?

One really important key to successful horse portraits is whether or not the artist has captured the true likeness and character of the animal. The artists ability to paint an attractive picture is not the same skill as their ability to accurately observe the finer details and nuances necessary for you to say “That is my horse!”.

No-one knows your horse as well as yourself – their character, habits and quirks that make them the individual you know and love. A quality equine artist will have developed the necessary skills to identify how to portray these in a painting. And it necessarily follows that if you ask an artist to produce a painting from a small photo you took yourself, that maybe has poor lighting and you’ve cropped off his ears, then you’re probably lined up for a disappointing result.

Does the horse artist need to visit my horse personally?

If you want the very best results, then in short, yes, the artist needs to visit. Even if you have taken some excellent photos – large, clear, sharp, this just isn’t as good as the artist being able to see the horse for themselves.

Artist meeting your horse: Face-to-face, the artist can get a MUCH better overall impression of your horse, that will enable them work more knowledgeably with the reference photos, be they the artist’s or your own. Photos are limited in their ability to capture detail; they are subject to the lighting conditions; they are limited to only one angle – in short, it’s like looking at your horse through fuzzy binoculars instead of standing next to them.

Having the artist make a personal visit does of course affect the overall costs, and this may well prove a deciding factor.

If you have to go down the route of supplying your own pictures to the artist, please remember – poor photos usually equals poor painting!

Equally though, if all you have are average photos, a good quality artist will still be able to produce an acceptable portrait from them, it’s just that despite their skills & creativity, they can only paint what they see and imagine the rest.

Personally, I recently produced a painting of a horse that had sadly died. The owner was able to provide me with a small selection of pictures. One had the right angle of head and body, but the colour and shadow was bad and was wearing a bridle which wasn’t wanted in the painting. I needed to use the other photos as reference to ‘fill in’ all the missing information – and the resulting painting was a success. My horse clipart now used as logo for horsehair pottery

From time to time different people contact me about using my horse clip art for different projects. Jaki and Bruce Merrihew of Arizona emailed me asking permission to use my horse head clip art of a horse with flames as a logo design to stamp on their Horsehair pottery.

The horsehair pottery samples you see in the images below were made by Jaki and Bruce Merrihew. The Arabian horse head ceramic piece is a gift to me from them. I photographed it so you could view it.

Jaki and Bruce used my horse head clip art on the bottoms of the horsehair pottery and I think they were right to feel that my horse and flame clipart would be perfect for this project. They also print the horse clipart as their logo on the gift cards they hang on the pottery items.

Info and History of Horsehair Pottery

Horsehair pottery is a 20th century Native American pottery tradition which seems to have come about by accident.
I read that it was develop because a native potter’s long hair touched and burned on a hot pottery piece as she removed it from the kiln. Where her hair touched the hot clay it crinkled and burned leaving leaving permanent squiggly, dark lines of carbon in the porous clay.

“That’s interesting” she must have thought (artistic types seem to be open to seeing design potential in strange occurrences). She made farther experiments using horsehair (seems she also had common sense too — didn’t want to burn all her hair). She found that the much coarser horsehair left a more striking impression in the pottery than fine human hair. All horsehair pottery has a similar look, but each is quite unique as the horsehair hits and burns on the pottery surface differently each and every time.

Because of its beauty the creation of horse hair pottery has been adopted by other potters both native and non native. Hair from a horse’s mane and/or tail are used and most horse hair pottery is created using white clay for better contrast with the fine dark lines of the burned horsehair. Because the clay is fired at a lower than usual temperature the pottery is porous and cannot be used as a vessel to hold fresh cut flowers in water. Horse hair pottery is wonderful for displaying dried and artificial flower arrangements and plants, and other dry items.

Horse hair pottery is a lovely and unique form of pottery that blends the controlled with the uncontrollable and unpredictable forces of nature.
