The foaling of a horse business

How a new equine business is born from noticing a hoof problem

In July of 2006 Bryan Tilghman contacted me about purchasing a horse logo design for a horse hoof product he was working on marketing. The product idea seemed sound to me and I was impressed with the fact that he seemed to have done his homework by researching the available product options and markets.

Too many people contact me wanting to start some kind of horse business, but they haven’t done ANY research at all. I have even turned down logo clients telling them to rethink their marketing plan (like make one in the first place) and then get back with me.

Horse show profitable to local businesses

I just found an equine news article, ‘Horse show good for business

This article tells how a community benefits from a annually held horse show. It quotes a variety of local merchants on the ways the horse event is helpful or profitable to them.

If you have a horse business I think you should read and make a copy of this article to show to local business people when you are tying to get them to post your ad, flyers, or posters, or help participate in your horse event. It would be good for them to read if you are trying to sell them advertising spots in your event program or sponsorship.

Equine Nutrition, blue ribbon vital!

Do you know the importance of proper nutrition for your horse’s health and performance?

I recently read about a top trainer that was quoted as saying, “the number one thing that my clients skimp on is top quality feed and nutrients for their horses”. He went on to say that within 30 to 60 days on his special diet the horse’s looks and attitude are vastly improved. So much so, that many of his clients when they visit their horse are amazed and ask what secret show grooming products does he use.

“They have a hard time understanding that it was just the difference in the quality of nutrition the horse received.”

So isn’t time for you to learn more about horse nutrition? Join me on Wednesday, August 1st, at 5 pm Pacific as EquineTeleseminar.net is hosting a special call with Dr. Eve Finkelstein, Bsc Bs MS Phd.

How to deal with fear around horses

Julie Goodnight sent me the following article about coping with fear

I, Joni Solis, have added my notes in [] throughout the posting.

Fear around horses is a normal emotion to have [boy that is right for me]; it’s what keeps you from doing something that could be deadly. There’s nothing wrong with being afraid at times; but fear is a negative attribute when it impacts your enjoyment or controls your actions. [Yep, fear around horses does curtail my enjoyment of them. You too?]

“Your fears are not walls, but hurdles. Courage is not the absence of fear, but the conquering of it.” — Dan Millman

If you ever feel fear, remember three simple, calming steps:

  1. keep your eyes focused
  2. breathe deeply (abdominal breathing)
  3. and control your body language.

If you can keep your eyes up and active, looking around and taking in information, you can actually prevent other symptoms of fear (dry mouth, butterflies, increased heart rate—you know the drill) from occurring. When your fear doesn’t escalate, your horse will continue to Read the rest of this entry »

Update on slaughter bound mares and foals

Here is the latest news on the mares and foals that need homes

Marian Mastin of Adopt A Foal just sent me the following report…

We have some volunteers making a run to Lubbock this weekend to pick up these babies…They’ll be traveling back this way at night/early morning hours due to the heat during the daytime…it will be a long trip home since they will be stopping every couple of hours for the babies to get their bearings and balance back… and of course, to nurse.

  1. The Bay Mare and paint foal have been spoken for, but it isn’t a done deal yet…we have one person in line waiting to see how that one hashes out…if they do become available, we will not be able to pick them up this weekend, but would most likely get them in the next couple of weeks.
  2. The Bay Mare and colt have been
